World Mental Health Day 2014

October 10, 2014 is World Mental Health Day. The objective is to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilize efforts in support of mental health. The World Health Organization’s theme this year is “Living with Schizophrenia.”

Over 300,000 people in Ontario live with schizophrenia. SSO works every day to provide support, counseling and services for the many individuals and families who need assistance. With the proper support individuals living with schizophrenia can lead healthy lives and contribute to their communities.

Christine Walter lives with schizoaffective disorder and struggled with substance use before getting the proper treatment she needed. Now she is a member of SSO’s speaker’s bureau, lives independently and has published a collection of her writing and art. Christine’s story is featured in the video below.
