Caregivers and Professionals Learn CBT-p Skills

From October 29 to November 6, SSO hosted the second Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for psychosis (CBT-p) training for caregivers. Over 100 caregivers, healthcare professionals and family members attended sessions at the Best Western Plus in Milton to learn from Dr. Douglas Turkington, a professor and researcher from the United Kingdom.

Dr. Turkington and his team, including researcher Latoyah Lebert delivered a two day introductory training to family members and caregivers and a week-long training for caregivers who were interested in a more hands-on training in an intimate group setting.

During the workshops, caregivers were introduced to coping strategies to help loved ones during occurrences of hallucinations, delusions and disorganized thoughts.

Volunteers included caregivers who had completed the training earlier this year who were able to talk about the positive impact these trainings had on their relationships with their loved ones.

SSO plans to continue its partnership with Dr. Turkington to continue CBT-p training in 2017.
