SSO Joins Patient Organizations for Submission

Together with patient group organizations from across different health areas, SSO has made a joint submission to the Patented Medicine Prices Review Board (PMPRB) in response to its Discussion Paper outlining a potential new direction for the organization. PMPRB is an independent quasi-judicial body that protects the interests of Canadians by ensuring that the prices of medications sold in Canada are not excessive. It does this by reviewing the prices that manufacturers charge for patented medications and, if a price is found to be excessive, can intervene to have it reduced. Drug pricing in Canada has a direct impact on public and private drug plans and policies, and by extension, on the ability of Canadians to access and afford medications. As part of the submission we contend that the PMPRB should continue to act as a monitor for the price of patented medicines to ensure that they are not excessive.

SSO has long advocated for improved access to mental health care and treatments, including medications. Our paper, Prescription for Holistic Care: Improving Access to Medications through Ontario’s Mental Health and Addictions Strategy, can be found here.
