A System in Crisis: Fight for change in the next election

People with schizophrenia and psychosis have a right to dignity, health and good quality of life – now is the time to put these rights at the forefront of our conversation on mental health.
Ontario’s mental health and addictions system is in crisis. For over 30 years, SSO has been hearing how stigma and discrimination, system gaps and other barriers to accessing mental health treatments and supports negatively affect individuals with schizophrenia and psychosis, especially when symptoms are severe and persistent.
Individuals and families with direct experience of schizophrenia and psychosis are often misunderstood and ignored in public policy developments and mental health initiatives and campaigns.
They continue to be left out of the dialogue on mental health in Ontario and across the country. This, despite a landmark funding agreement between the Governments of Ontario and Canada elevating mental health care as a national and provincial priority.
This election, help us call on the province to ensure every Ontarian’s right to access evidence-based mental health care, including those affected by schizophrenia and psychosis:
