Sudbury Volunteers Celebrate 20 years

SSO’s volunteer group in Sudbury has been with the organization since the very beginning and this April, they celebrated the 20th anniversary of their annual fundraising dinner.

Organized by long-time volunteers Evelyn Fillier and Brenda Pajunen, the dinner took place at the Lexington Hotel in Sudbury with over 90 people in attendance.

“It was a delightful evening. I heard from many people that they had a great time, they enjoyed the food and the venue,” Evelyn said. “There was a great sense of community the entire evening.”

Mary Alberti, CEO of SSO, attended and thanked the audience for their continuous support. “Our volunteer community in Sudbury is small but what they lack in size, they make up for in dedication,” she told the crowd. “You being here today shows Sudbury that you care about people living with schizophrenia and psychosis.”

Over $5000 was raised to go towards research into schizophrenia. Specifically, the efficacy of cognitive behavioural therapy as an intervention to poverty, cannabis and its connection to mental illness in youth, and research on the development of an online navigation platform for youth with serious mental illness and their caregivers.

Sudbury volunteers would like to thank Isabel Brown, Paul Lipartiti, Olive Girard, the Langlois family, Crocodile Printing, Sudbury Regional Credit Union, Skakoon Home Hardware and Lexington Hotel staff for their hard work and support.
