About Immigration Support
SSO has established a partnership with the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada (IRB) to provide support services to persons with mental health issues during immigration/deportation proceedings. Under this partnership, SSO provides Designated Representatives (DR) upon request from the IRB to support persons who have been deemed to require mental health accommodation supports for hearings at the Immigration Division (ID), Immigration Appeal Division (IAD), and Refugee Appeal Division (RAD).
SSO provides system navigation, advocacy and support for individuals and families living with mental illness who are going through immigration/deportation proceedings. This includes one-on-one counseling, letters of support and assistance with connecting to resources and supports. We also provide consultation to professionals supporting individuals with mental illness and immigration needs.
This support can include:
Help with finding and retaining a lawyer.
Help with understanding the immigration/deportation process and how to navigate this system.
Help with gathering evidence to support the case and ensuring that lawyer puts forward the best possible case to the IRB.
Help with connecting to mental health and social services.
Help during all immigration/deportation appearances through in-person court support.
Filing and perfecting an appeal to the Refugee Appeal Division on behalf of an unsuccessful refugee protection claimant, if required.
