When an individual with a mental illness is charged with an offence, families and caregivers are often left in the dark. Knowledge gaps regarding how the justice system works and what options are available to their loved one make them ill-prepared to take on a support or advocacy role. Our staff can take on a case at any point in the justice process – from arrest to incarceration – and provide:
- Navigational Support: Explaining how the system works and helping families effectively advocate for their loved one;
- Emotional Support: Helping families to cope with new circumstances and prevent future criminalization.
Individual Support
JAMH staff can provide support to families on either a short term or an ongoing basis, depending on the need. So whether you require emotional and navigational support throughout your experience or just need an answer to one question, we are here to help.
Court Support
Some families may be eligible for court support services, which includes accompanying families to court, working with court staff in case coordination, and providing counselling throughout the court process.
Group Support
Families whose cases are especially complex, or whose loved one’s charges are more serious, may be suitable for the ANCRSS (Advocates for the Not Criminally Responsible Schizophrenia Sufferers) support group. ANCRSS is an online, e-mail based group which provides a safe space for families to share their stories and gain from collective experiences.
Peer Support
Some families may benefit from talking one-on-one with someone who has been in their situation. Our staff can connect people with a family member who has been through a similar experience to obtain comfort and guidance.
