SSO’s Access to Treatment Campaign
The Schizophrenia Society of Ontario has designated access to treatment as our three-year advocacy priority. Because people with schizophrenia require a range of services and supports to help in their recovery, “treatment” has been defined broadly to include three core elements:
- Psychiatric treatment – this includes treatment modalities such as medication, hospital-based care, and care from a psychiatrist.
- Community services – this includes community-based mental health services such as counselling, peer support programs, case management, and services from an ACT team.
- Social supports – this includes support for housing, employment, and income such as ODSP.
When we embarked on this campaign in January 2008, the questions we aimed to answer were:
- How is the issue of access defined?
- What are the barriers people with schizophrenia and their families face?
- What needs to change to improve the system?
- How can this be achieved?
Our goal has been to get out there and hear from you – members of the community and people who have been affected by schizophrenia – to find out what needs to change. Your voice will inform our campaign and all our advocacy efforts for the next three years.
Key Messages
The Problem:
Schizophrenia is a treatable brain disease. But people living with it face numerous barriers to accessing the psychiatric treatment, community services, and social supports they need.
This has a devastating impact not only on people living with schizophrenia, but on their families and society as a whole.
The Solution:
It’s time to break down the wall that is preventing people with schizophrenia from getting the treatment and support they need and deserve.
Eliminating barriers and providing access to timely and comprehensive care will allow people to manage their disease and lead meaningful, productive lives.
The Action:
The Ontario government must act now to improve access to psychiatric treatment, community services and social supports for people with schizophrenia.
Increased funding and policy changes are required to create a more client-centred, comprehensive continuum of care that meets the range of needs of people in recovery.
