The St. Joseph’s Mental Health Spirit of Hope Awards honoured individuals and organizations in the Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant community that have made a significant contribution in the mental health and addictions area.
Staff members from SSO’s Hamilton office were nominated in the group/organization category.  On October 2nd, SSO Hamilton staff members Marina Sue-Ping and Sharon Smikle were in attendance at the Spirit of Hope Awards event with keynote address by Margaret Trudeau.
Vince Richard and his wife Agnes were also invited to attend the event in Hamilton.  Sharon nominated Vince who has made it his personal crusade to talk about schizophrenia in order to normalize conversations about schizophrenia and reduce the stigma attached to mental illness. Vince was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 1993 and has received support from SSO. He has also helped to raise funds for SSO by participating in the Yogathon and Peace of Minds Walk.
Congratulations Sharon, Marina and Vince on this incredible honour.
