Why We Walk

The Facts:

  • One in 100 people worldwide are affected by schizophrenia – more than 140,000 live in Ontario.
  • The onset of schizophrenia is usually between the ages of 15-30, which can have significant impact on a young person’s relationships, education and life goals.
  • Five to 13 per cent of people living with schizophrenia die by suicide.
  • But there is hope. With the right treatment and support, people can and do get better and can lead fulfilling lives.
People living with schizophrenia or psychosis can experience misunderstanding and lessened opportunities in many facets of life – from education and employment to accessing services and housing.

The Peace of Minds Walk is a signature event that brings people together to raise awareness of schizophrenia and psychosis, educate and empower people and families impacted by schizophrenia or psychosis as well as support vital programs and services provided by SSO.

SSO is Ontario's largest charitable health organization that supports individuals, families, caregivers and communities affected by schizophrenia and psychosis across the province.

For 40 years, SSO has made positive change through:
  • Counselling and social support.
  • Mobilizing and educating youth.
  • Educating to increase community capacity to respond to mental illness.
  • Advocating to government and health system movers for important changes.
  • Researching and innovating.
  • Building community partnerships.
